The mouth is the gateway to the entire body.  Over 99% of things that enter your body enter through the oral facial cavity.  It is for this reason that most dentists ensure their patients understand that anything that enters the mouth will have either a positive or negative affect on the teeth, gums, tongue, palate, salivary glands, etc. and the general health of the mouth.

At Tranquility Dental, we go the necessary step further.  While the subject is rarely (if ever) discussed with patients by their general dentist, our doctors discuss how substances that enter the oral cavity affect that entire region and they also inform patients as to how the disease and decay of the mouth affect the organs throughout the remainder of the body.  They educated patients on how the mouth affects the overall physical health of the body.

It has always been reasonable to assume that decay and disease traveling through the veins in the oral cavity and salivary glands could, at some point, reach other organs in the body and adversely affect those organs.  Research has now proven that oral disease is both a risk factor and a cause of such things as diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, pregnancy issues, cancer, respiratory diseases, stroke, dementia, etc. and even death.  Yes, people have died and/or lost babies as a result of maintaining poor oral hygiene.

While some dentists believe offering free whitening is important, we believe overall health is serious!  Our dentists believe that a pretty smile is important, but they believe great overall health is critical.  While we are very skilled cosmetic dentists, our focus for a patient’s visit, initially, is their overall health and well-being.  Through assessing medical history and detailed examination, our dentists will discuss any potential risk.

This educational page offers information regarding the affects of oral health on overall health.  Please give us a call to set up an appointment if you feel you or your family may be at risk, if you haven’t been to the dentist in awhile, or if you haven't been educated on your potential risk factors.  Please check the documents and links below for further detailed research information and news articles relating to the oral health – general health relationship.
